Gear Cervelo Magnum TT Top Magnum T.T.

Cervelo's Magnum Time Trial jersey is my second piece of apparel from the '05 line up to review.  Like the Des Alpes jersey, it appears to be very well made and employs some high-end fabric, namely E-Fit compression fabric with 40+ UV protection to prevent sun burn and dehydration.  It's really very impressive and as usual, I'll point you to the Cervelo web site where you can read all the details on the Magnum TT Top.  One of the interesting things you'll read is that Cervelo's moisture management is "born" with the fabric at the time of construction, not added later.  That's the sort of "from the ground up" thinking Cervelo is famous for with its bikes and which it is now obviously incorporating into its apparel line up.

Let me start by saying I only do two or three actual time trials a year so I'm certainly concentrating on how the Magnum will fit into my triathlon wardrobe.  Don't let the fact that this garment was designed for road cycling deter you from considering it.  Cervelo has really done its home work on the fit of this garment; it hugs all the curves without binding or chaffing, feeling like a second skin. The Magnum would be a good choice for cool weather duathlons and triathlons (to be worn under a wetsuit).  I doubt it would be appropriate for a swim without a wetsuit; the jersey's tailored fit and pocket design might work but I think the wrists and collar would let too much water in.

I've always wanted one of those one piece time trial suits, but again, I only do a few TTs per year so spending $150 or more for something I'd only use occasionally has been out of the question.  The Magnum is a great choice as it can be used with my normal bibs for a very aero set up for TTs, with tri shorts for cool weather duathlons or with tri shorts under a wetsuit for cool weather triathlons - all for $85.  It will also make a great base layer on the bike and run during the winter.  As with the Des Alpes jersey, I'm extremely impressed with the value offered in the Magnum.  Given the design, quality and aesthetics of this jersey, I would expect it to cost more.  When you factor in the versatility of the Magnum, it becomes a great addition to the multisport wardrobe.

At this writing, we are in the full grip of summer.  As such, my time in the Magnum thus far has been brief, but I am very impressed with how cool I stayed given the long sleeves and lack of zipper.  Also, I was surprised at the comfort while running in the Magnum.
