Gear Adidas Boston Classic Boston Qualifier

I actually tried the Adidas Boston Classics on by accident when the sales clerk at my local store brought them out instead of the requested Universal model (which is also made by Adidas).  I ended up going home with the Boston Classics for several reasons.

  1. They have a wide and comfortable toe box, something that is missing from many Adidas running shoes.  I have yet to understand why any running shoe has a tapered toe box, as nothing can ruin a long run more completely than a blister induced by toes pushed too closely together.
  2. The Boston Classics have some of the best cushioning on the market, through both the forefoot and heel.  These are true cushioned running shoes and feel excellent, particularly after running in some lightweight "racers".
  3. They are reasonably priced, particularly compared to the $100+ price tag for many other top-end running shoes.

The Boston Classics are built for neutral runners; those without need of much pronation control.  At 10.8 ounces they are lightweight for trainers, slightly heavy for racers, just right for long distance events (such as the one they are named for).  Importantly, though, runners with low arches should keep looking.

I have run about 100 miles in these shoes so far and have been fairly pleased.  They still have a nice cushioned feel despite several spins through the washing machine and are showing few signs of wear. On the negative side, I am having trouble finding the right lace tension for these shoes - too much and my toes feel cramped, too little and the heel slips around. For this reason I'll try something else once these shoes wear down.

Adidas offers a dizzying array of choices for runners. Go check out the Adidas web site, select Men's Footwear/Running, and you’ll get an amazing 46 different models to chose from.  I don’t consider this a positive; how can you select the best running shoe from such a long list?  How does the AdiStar differ from the Axiom, the SuperNova, the a3, or the Ozweego?  Adidas may see this as providing comprehensive coverage across price ranges and needs, but I found it to be a confusing jumble of model names and acronyms.  Maybe next time I'll try out the ClimaCool Rotterdam Megaride 3 Cushion. Or maybe not.
