Gear Hammer Nutrition/E-CAPS Perpetuem Perpetual Energy |
After using Accelerade for over a year, I decided to try out one of the drink mixes from Hammer Nutrition/E-Caps, at the urging of Mark (our local nutrition expert). Mark has been a fan of Hammer products for many years now, particularly the fact that it contains no simple sugars. I chose Perpetuem, as it is Hammer's choice for longer distance events and I was training for a half-ironman.
To put it simply, I am blown away with how well Perpetuem works. It provides an extremely smooth and reliable band of energy throughout a workout, whether short or long. The taste is very mellow and therefore doesn't get "old" over time. In comparison, the Accelerade has a much stronger flavor and provides energy in bursts as the sugar hits your bloodstream and then quickly dissipates.
Perpetuem provides carbohydrates, proteins, electrolytes and fats in precise doses to best supply everything needed during endurance events. It is a single fuel solution to racing needs, rather than carrying a pocket full of different pills, bars, gels and drink mixes.
Note that Perpetuem was particularly engineered for racing under your aerobic theshold (less than 70% of your maximum heart rate). For higher-intensity racing, it may be beneficial to add additional electrolytes throughout the event.
One final note - if you decide to use Perpetuem, be sure to clean out your water bottles right after each ride, as it will quickly corrode the inside of the bottle otherwise.
