It takes a lot for me to start throwing around phrases like, "the best ever" or "my absolute favorite", but at least up until this point in my cycling life, the Topolino Revelation C19 wheels are the best performing wheelset I've ridden. I do not want to take them off of my bike and I will not send them back to Topolino and no one can make me.
It's not like I've been riding junk either - Mavic Ksyrium SL, Zipp 404/303, Bontrager Race X Lite, Shimano Dura Ace 7800. The C19s are lighter than the clincher versions of the aforementioned wheels (and not too far from tubular Zipps), offer better acceleration and handling and are far more comfortable to boot. The difference is immediately noticeable and only becomes more glaring as the miles pile on. These wheels handle fantastically with no perceivable lag between thinking and going.
As you can see in the picture, these are not deep-dish aero wheels at 19.5mm and yet they give me the feeling that they are slicing through the wind. The spoke design must be amazingly efficient. The spokes are of the bladed variety and constructed of carbon and Kevlar making them lighter and stronger than typical steel spokes. The revolutionary design is completely different than anything else in the market place. A spoke is connected to the rim but does not terminate at the hub, rather it passes through the composite hub connecting instead to the rim opposite its starting connection. The result is a remarkably stiff and firm ride with razor like handling and shocking comfort.
In addition to surprising aerodynamics, the C19s have remarkably low rotational weight. Rotational weight in a wheel set is where the weight really matters. Typically, when speeds pass the 30 mph mark, there is a distinct feeling that the bike is pulling itself upright as you lean into a turn. This is due to centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the wheels and the amount of that force is directly related to rotational weight. At 30-35 mph, that feeling is unnoticeable with the C19s. I would expect that with $2500, 1000 gram carbon tubulars, but the C19 is a $900 wheel set with aluminum rims!
As for durability, it will be a few months before I can comment on that first hand. Of course, thus far Topolino's promises are as good as gold so I would expect the C19s are very durable - just as it claims.
Let's run through the reasons you should be buying these wheels immediately:
- Clincher rim - tires and tubes just like you're used to
- Hubs - long fiber carbon composite hubs, maintenance free sealed bearings
- Low rotational weight - fast acceleration, rolls along the flats with less effort, climbs like a dream
- Stiff yet comfortable - phenomenal power transfer, cornering and even sprinting without even a hint of harshness
- Aero dynamics - surprising aero dynamic performance for a low profile wheel
- Looks - they look really cool spinning and like nothing else on the road
- Price - out performs wheels that cost twice as much, absolutely blows away everything in the same price range
- Made in the USA - Bethel, CT to be exact - we don't get many chances in cycling products to buy something made here, so that's nice
- Honesty - you can honestly tell your spouse that this upgrade is worth the money and will make you a better cyclist
Please check out the C19 page on Topolino's web site for more information. About the only downside is that there aren't too many Topolino dealers. I demanded that my local bike shop sign up to be a dealer immediately, you should do the same.
As good as the C19s are, there's actually a model above them in the line up - the Revelation V39. 1170 grams, 40mm deep carbon tubular rim with the same "Carbon Core" spoke material and composite hubs as the C19, oh man I need a cold shower!
