Gear Shimano TR02 TR Oh Two

After a month of riding in the Shimano TR02, I have to say that these shoes rock. They have all of the features that you look for in a cycling shoe, while being tailored for the quick-entries and quick-exits needed in triathlon. I'll take the major features in order of importance.

1. An extremely stiff and solid sole. This is the stiffest cycling shoe I have ever used - the carbon fiber outsole is extremely rigid, while still very light. In fact, after my first couple of rides I found the outer edges of my feet hurting, which I contributed to these very rigid soles and my less-than-perfect leg alignment. I added a pair of inserts - the same inserts I use in my running shoes - to the TR02's and the problem went away.

2. Quality mesh construction throughout the shoe upper. This shoe breathes well, and I have had no problem with "hot foot" issues. These shoes fit my wide foot better than most Italian brands (or Nike).

3. A single large velcro strap and heel strap. These provide quick entry and removal during a race, while having very little penalty during training rides. You cannot adjust these shoes as finely as with a ratcheting system, but I find it to be plenty good enough.

So, all that is left is price and look. For $160 you get a top-of-the-line cycling shoe and the best platform in the business - a fair price in my book. Regarding looks, the silver-on-silver treatment is not particularly impressive and a bit loud for my tastes, while not going over the line into "ugly". It's something that I can live with to gain the other good features of this shoe.
