The TgR Philosophy
Hello, and welcome to the TriGearReview web site. We are very excited to be starting up this new web site, with a focus on reviewing the gear used by triathletes from the enthusiast age grouper to the elite competitor. So, set your bookmark here, as the reviews will be rolling in.

Remember, these reviews are written only by the TgR staff and represent our opinions. No competing sales reps slamming each others products or disgrutled consumers, mad at the world because they bought the wrong size shoes. Many of the reviews you will read represent opinions of products we have spent our own money on. Many products are sent to us by manufacturers for review. In either case, you'll get our true opinion of that product's performance, quality, aesthetics and overall value. If it stinks, we'll tell you. If it cost too much for the performance it offers or doesn't live up to the hype, we'll tell you. If it is so good we would rather eat crushed glass than give it back, we'll tell you that too. Importantly, though, we will attempt to tell you in fewer words than most reviews you are accustomed to. We will, when appropriate, "cut to the chase".

As you begin to read the reviews, you will notice that the staff writers take different approaches to writing a review, place differing values on features and may even completely disagree on the utility of a product. Over time, you will discover which reviewers fit your own opionions best and will therefore give "you" greater insight into gear purchases you are considering. We hope you will find the site much like "having a friend" that owns a piece of gear you are interested in. Check out the author section for details on each reviewer.
Our Rating System
TgR rates products in 4 categories - Performance, Quality, Aesthetics and Value. For each category, a value between 1 and 10 is given for a product.

For a TgR review, a value of 5 (shown above) represent an "average" product rating - neither good nor bad. Any value above 5 represents a better-than-average rating, while a value below 5 represents a worse-than-average rating.

Note that many sites use a school-like scoring system, where 7 represents a marginal rating. We feel that this system reduces the usefulness of the rating system, forcing 80% of all products into an 8 rating. Our system provides for a truly granular system, one in which outstanding products are rewarded and sub-par products are shown to be just that.
